Getting Back on Track

Since getting back from vacation Eric and I have both been putting forth a lot of effort on getting back on track with eating and working out.

You might remember a few months ago I challenged myself to actually start using my cookbooks. Well it was going good for a while and then I just kind of fell off the wagon.
The other day I was flipping through Thrive, one of my favorite nutrition books ever. I am huge fan of Brendan Brazier but I had never actually made any of his recipes. This week I was able to knock out two new recipes when I made Bacon Cheeseburgers.

Vegan Bacon Cheeseburger

I combined two burgers recipes from Thrive, the Walnut Hemp and Pecan Sunflower burgers. You can eat these raw or cook them and I choose to toast them slightly in a skillet. For the cheese I made the Creamy Nutritional Yeast Sauce. This sauce was a little weird but really good. It has whole sunflowers in them but I never noticed them while eating. And the bacon is just regular ol’ tempeh bacon.

And on the workout front things are about to get busy.
Eric starts his racing season this upcoming weekend (wish him luck!) and then I have my first race the following weekend (Cherry Blossom 10 miler!). I wasn’t sure how easy/hard it was going to be start running after taking 10 days off and it ended up being a little bit of both. My first run back was full of fail. I actually tripped over my own feet and fell and scraped up both of my knees pretty bad. But all the runs after that have been easy peasy, including my 10 miler yesterday.

Which leads me to my next point…
I’m not sure if it’s the placebo effect or what, but I recently starting taking a magnesium supplement and it’s working wonders. I’ve been having trouble staying asleep all night, I’ll be exhausted, fall asleep just fine, then wake up for a few hours in the middle of the night before falling back asleep around 5am. This happened to me a few years ago and I had to start taking prescription pills. I wanted to avoid that this time (and also avoid a doctor’s visit) so I looked into alternative ways. So far the magnesium pills have been helping (I guess?). But magnesium also helps with muscle recovery and I woke up this morning with absolutely no soreness from my 10 miler yesterday. I’m also trying to each more magnesium rich foods but thought trying a supplement couldn’t hurt. Placebo or not, I’m gonna live it up for the time being.

  1. Good for you for getting back on track! The burgers look really tasty. I also should use my cookbooks more.

  2. Hey guy- Big fan of your blog. I feel you on the “falling off the horse” business. It’s tough psyching yourself up to workout and eat right after a long, food-binging vacation. I’m actually doing the opposite right now, busting my butt to get in shape for Vegas next week so I can pig out when I get there. Good luck, and welocme back!

    • Thanks for the comment. We both tried to eat really healthy leading up to the vacation and it seemed to work out really well.
I thought I would be sick of beer when we returned, but oddly enough, I’m craving it more. Oh well, no complaints there.

  3. Oops, that was supposed to say “Hey guys” not “hey guy.” I suck.

  4. Did you read that article about veggie burgers in NYT yesterday? It’s pretty cool how chefs and stuff are taking on the challenge of developing good veggie burgers.

  5. I wonder if you could do a vegan spinach and artichoke dip

  6. I had the same goal of using my cookbooks this year- so far I have tried 15 new recipes so I think I’m doing good. I don’t have Thrive, but I might have to get it at your recommendation 😉

Also that dog volunteering program sounds like the coolest thing ever. I volunteered for years at an animal shelter, but it’s been too long. What about the little guys that don’t want to run- do they get to go on walks? Don’t tempt me with picture of shelter dogs- I want one so bad!

    • I think we have two copies of Thrive so maybe you can borrow one to check out. It’s really informative as far as vegan nutrition for athletes goes.

Monster Milers is awesome! I hope to get a post up next week about it. We are running the high energy dogs, the smaller/older/not crazy hyper dogs are usually walked by volunteers. But Milers don’t all have to run, you can walk the dogs too!

  7. That burger looks fantastic! I don’t have Thrive, but now I wanna get it.

  8. Do you take any other supplements in addition to magnesium?

    • No I don’t. I used to try but would always forget. I have a bottle of vitamins I am trying to work my way through, but I don’t think I will buy anymore when I finish the bottle.

I do try to get a blood test everywhere to check my levels and to see if I need to take extra supplements. So far everything is good though.

  9. dude, this is going to sound totally creeperish and weird, but I was at Dos Segundos for happy hour on Friday and totally saw you guys! see what I mean, it sounds stalkerish…I was sitting by the door with a friend and was like, how do I know these people? then it hit me…I totally should have said hello instead of being a creeper, but I decided to spare myself my own awkwardness…buuut anyway, crazy!

    • OH MY GOD. i am actually really bummed we didn’t meet. i would have been totally awkward too but it would have been rad.

now i am going to keep an eye out for you around philly.
